Miner Men’s Golf Back in Action Monday

After a short break, the UTEP Miners men’s golf team is back in action Monday as it travels up Interstate-10 to Las Cruces for the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate tournament hosted by New Mexico State.

The tourney will be held October 17 and 18 at NM State’s University Golf Course, a 7242 yard, par-71 course located on campus. Teams will tee off in a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. both days, 36 holes will be played Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday.

The Miners won the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate last year with a 54-hole total of 854 (284-288-282), 17 strokes ahead of runner-up Grand Canyon.

Fresh off a championship run at the Fighting Irish Classic last Tuesday, the Miners will take on a fourteen team field that includes NM State, Grand Canyon, Incarnate Word, McMurry (Individuals), Odessa, Oral Roberts, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, UMKC, Utah Valley, UTEP, UT Rio Grande Valley, Western Illinois, Western New Mexico and Wichita State.

Competing for the Miners are Frederik Dreier, Andreas Sorenson, Charles Corner, Nicklas Pihl, Prescott Mann, Ben Getman, Evan Macias and Cole Donielson.

Donielson, a freshman, is the only player that did not compete on last years championship team, which included Dreier, who shot 212 (71-71-70) and finished second, Sorenson in fourth, Corner in 11th, Mann in 21st, Pihl tied for 43rd, Getman in 54th and Macias in 65th.

Donielson had a stellar debut for the Miners last week, placing 54th as an individual.
