Miner Men’s Golf in First Place after 36 holes

Las Cruces, N.M.- After firing a season-best round of 284 (even par) in round one and a round two tally of 288 (four-over par), the UTEP men’s golf team (572 total/four-over par) sits atop the leaderboard in front of 13 other teams at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate.

The Miners lead second place Lamar by six strokes entering Tuesday’s final round. UTEP will tee it up at 8:30 a.m. (MT) looking to secure its first team title during head coach Scott Lieberwirth’s tenure.

Junior Frederik Dreier and freshman Andreas Sorenson both are tied for fifth place after 36 holes at the par 71 NM State Golf Course. Dreier (71-71-142) fired two exact rounds of even par one day one; he leads player scoring on par 3’s with a collective total of three-under par.

Sorenson (70-72-142) filled up the card with four birdies in round one and then followed that with up with a copious, 15 pars in round two.

Prescott Mann carded rounds of 70 and 73 to stand at a total of 143 (one-over par) tied for ninth place. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native dominated the par 5’s all day long; he has the second-best player score on those holes and sits at a cumulative score of four-under par on them.

Charlie Corner is tied for 18th place with a three-over par 145 (73-72). Corner’s first round was a rollercoaster of a ride on the front nine with two birdies, three pars, two bogeys and two additional double bogeys, but he battled on the back nine and carded two birdies alongside seven pars. Round two was a bit more steady for the Canadian with two birdies, 13 pars and three bogeys.

Nicklas Pihl is tied for 78th place at 15-over par (79-78).
