Miner Men’s Golf places 12th at Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, Ca. – The UTEP Men’s Golf team finished up the final round of play at the 74th Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf with the Miners finishing 12th as a team on Wednesday at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, California.

UTEP posted its lowest round of the tournament to open the event on Monday with a team total of 370 (+20). The Miners shot 373 (+23) in the second round on Tuesday before finishing up with a team total of 378 (+28) in Wednesday’s final round.

“The Western Intercollegiate and Pasatiempo is an incredible test of golf,” head coach Derek Plucienski said. “It was awesome for our guys to get an opportunity to compete at the highest level of college golf while being aired on the GOLF channel. It was not the finish we were looking for, but there were a lot of positives to take away. I am enthused and excited about continuing to improve and build our program. We look forward to preparing this upcoming week for the Conference USA Championship.”

UTEP’s Greg Yellin (69-75-76) and Santiago Castilla (72-72-76) led the Miners with both Miners finishing in a tie for 48th with a three-day total of 220 (+10). Yellin posted the lowest score by a Miner in the opening round, shooting 69 (-1) to finish the first day tied for sixth place individually.

Greg Holmes finished the event with a three-round total of 226 (76-75-75; +16) to finish tied for 67th, while Marcus Khaw shot 77 and 78 in the first two rounds before finishing up with his best round on Wednesday with a score of 72 for a total of 227 (+17).

UTEP’s Jacob Presutti finished the event at 22-over par after shooting 232 (80-73-79) over the course of three rounds, while Cole Donielson (76-82-81) shot 29-over with a three-round total of 239.

Pepperdine captured the team title at this weekend’s Western Intercollegiate after finishing 4-under par as a team, while Joe Highsmith also took home the individual title for the Waves after shooting 5-under par at the event.

Next up, the Miners will now turn their attention to the 2021 Conference USA Championships on April 26-29 in Texarkana, Arkansas.
