Miner Tennis squad to close regular season at home this week

Coming off its first win again NM State in five years, the UTEP tennis team (4-6) will look to build on that momentum with two home matches to close out the regular season this week.

The Miners will play host to UTRGV (3-15) at 12 p.m. MT Tuesday and Tarleton State (8-9) at 12 p.m. MT Thursday.

“We are very excited to get to finish the regular season with two home matches this week,’” UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “We have been slowly improving with each match and are coming off a good win so we feel like we are ready to go. As always, the end of the season is bittersweet as we will say goodbye to seniors Vanessa Valdez and Erandi Martinez on Thursday. I hope we can finish on a strong note as we head to the C-USA championships the following week.”

The Miners are in the midst of playing five matches in seven days to close out the regular season with a sprint. Making the closing stretch even more taxing is the fact that UTEP had seven matches total the first three months of the year. It has handled the sequence well so far with a mark of 2-1, including besting NM State on the road, 4-1, on Sunday. It was the first victory against the Aggies since 2016.

It also marks the final week of regular-season action for seniors Erandi Martinez and Vanessa Valdez. The duo has combined to win 60 singles matches during their time together in the Sun City. Martinez burst onto the scene with a record of 20-10 as Fernandez’s first recruit. She has amassed nearly 50 singles wins over her four years. Valdez, who transferred from NM State, has picked up 15 wins in singles during her Miner career.
