FARGO, N.D. – The UTEP volleyball team picked up wins over Bradley and South Dakota State to finish 2-1 at the North Dakota Invitational. With the wins, the Miners improve to 2-4 on the season.
Bradley took the first set over the Miners from the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse, 25-23, after 18 tie scores and nine lead changes. UTEP came back to tie the match with a 25-19 victory in the second frame before both teams stormed out after the intermission. The score saw 13 tie scores and seven lead changes but the Miners ultimately took the third stanza, 28-26. The fourth period was another point for point battle but
UTEP came out on top with a 25-19 set win to close out the match 3-1 over the Braves.
Lindsey Larson registered her first career triple-double with 25 assists, 17 digs and 10 kills while adding four blocks and a service ace.
Two Miners saw their way into the double-double category. Ashley Grzebeniak, who led the squad in kills, picked up 18 kills, 11 digs, a service ace and a block while Amanda King totaled 21 assists, 11 digs, a service ace and a kill. Tatum Winter knocked down seven kills while hitting at a team-best .333 clip and contributed five blocks and three digs on the backcourt.
On defense, Sarah Villa notched 25 digs while freshman Niki Cebak totaled 14 digs.
In the afternoon, the Orange and Blue got its second win of the day and the season by taking down South Dakota State in four sets (25-14, 18-25, 25-17, 25-15).
UTEP was on the board first with a 25-14 win in the opening set. SDSU responded with a 25-18 win in the second set to tie the match 1-1. The Miners took back control after the intermission, winning the third period, 25-17, and the fourth, 25-15 to claim a 3-1 victory over the Jackrabbits.
Larson registered 25 assists, 12 digs, eight kills, four blocks and a service ace to put up a double-double. Maddie Morgan paced the UTEP offense with a total of 14 kills with a career-best .700 hitting percentage. Macey Austin followed in suit with 10 kills while Winter added five.
For the defense, Villa put up 14 total digs while Cebak had a total of 10 digs. Kylie Baumgartner totaled four blocks from the net and four kills.
At the end of the tournament, senior Tatum Winter was named to the NDSU Classic/Cambria Hotel & Hampton Inn All-Tournament Team.
