The women’s team placed seventh in the 5K race, while the men came home ninth, running in the 8K race.
Clinton, Ms. – The UTEP men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the 2017 Conference USA Championships Saturday morning in Clinton, Ms.
Sophomore Winny Koech took silver at the 2017 Conference USA Championships Saturday morning. The women’s team placed seventh in the 5K race, while the men finished ninth, running in the 8K race.
Leading the women’s team was sophomore Winny Koech and junior Lilian Koech. Winny Koech claimed second-place with a season-best time of 16:38.5, while Lilian notched a fourth-place showing with a time of 17:19.96. Winny Koech received her second career All-C-USA first team honor, while Lilian received her first career All-C-USA first team honors.
Sophomore Linda Cheruiyot stopped the clock at 17:55.12 to place 16th overall and earned all-conference third team honors.
Rounding out the squad were the three freshmen, Andrea Lucero, Carolyne Chepkosgei and Destiny White. Lucero clocked a personal-best 19:22.84, while Chepkosgei followed with a time of 20:20.28 and White notched a personal-best 20:57.90.
The women’s team finished with 158 points to place seventh in the 13-team field. The Miners finished above FIU (215 points), UTSA (232 points), Florida Atlantic (272 points), Marshall (281 points) LA Tech (347 points) and WKU (365 points).
On the men’s side, sophomore Antony Kosgei finished ninth overall with a season-best 24:45.83 in a field of 77 runners.
Kosgei received second team honors.
Freshman Cornelius Kapel finished second for the Miners, clocking a personal-best time of 25:19.84 taking 20th overall. Kapel was named to the third team.
Allen Ortiz made his debut for the Orange and Blue, stopping the clock at 30:27.25, followed by Esteban Montanez (30:55.76), Carvellion Horn (37:03.68) and Asa Guevara (40:44.88).
The men’s team tallied 234 points, which were good for ninth in the 11-team field. The Miners finished ahead of Florida Atlantic (264 points) and FIU (313 points).
Up next the Miners compete at the NCAA Mountain Regional in Logan, Utah on Friday, Nov. 10.
