College Station, Texas – UTEP’s Michael Saruni and Jonah Koech both advanced to the final at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships in their respective events on Friday afternoon in College Station, Texas.
“We had two guys here with a main goal which was to advance to the finals,” head coach Mika Laaksonen said. “They both got the job done and now can focus on tomorrow’s race where anything can happen.”
Koech notched a fourth-place finish in the mile preliminaries with a time of 4:04.76. The Kenya native clocked the third-fastest time in the country (3:55.81) this year at the Don Kirby Elite. The junior was able to clinch an automatic qualifying spot into Saturday’s final starting at 3:10 p.m. MT.
Saruni secured his spot in the 800m final by clocking a time of 1:47.95 garnering a fourth-place finish in his heat. The Kenyan native holds the no. 2 NCAA all-time best 800m time of 1:44.89 just behind his coach Paul Ereng (1:44.84, 1989). The sophomore will compete in the 800m final on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
