Miners Close Out Action at NCAA West Prelims

Sacramento – The UTEP track and field team concluded action at the 2019 NCAA West Prelims on Saturday.

Chantoba Bright closed out her first season with the Orange and Blue competing in the triple and long jump. The freshman posted a 24th-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 12.58m. Bright registered a leap of 5.84m in the long jump on Friday evening.

Iason Machairas also took the field for the last time this season in the men’s shot put. The freshman scratched his first two attempts of the day, before recording a toss of 17.38m in his final throw.

Sean Bailey and Lilian Koech are the two Miners that advanced to the NCAA Championships yesterday.

Bailey earned an automatic bid, finishing second in the 400m quarterfinals. The junior crossed the finish line with a season-best time of 45.19, posting a fourth-place finish overall.

Koech is making her second trip to the NCAA Championships, the senior clocked in a personal-best time of 2:03.73, automatically advancing with a third-place finish in the second heat.

The 2019 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships is scheduled for June 5-8 in Austin, Texas.
