Miners Close Out Regular Season in Arizona

Tucson – The UTEP track and field team closed out the regular season at the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Ariz. on Saturday night.

Sean Bailey stormed out of the blocks and into the national leaderboard. The junior won the 400m with a season-best time of 45.54, which ranks him sixth nationally.

Carolyne Chepkosgei crosses the finish line first in the women’s 800m with a personal-best time of 2:06.45. The sophomore currently rates third in Conference USA.

In the hurdles, Kimisha Chambers led the Miners with a second-place finish with a time of 57.82 in the 400m hurdles. Her time currently ranks 10th nationally and first in C-USA. Teammate Dreshanae Rolle finished fifth with a season-bet time of 59.23, which is the second-best time in the league this season.

Freshman Maribel Caicedo clocked in a collegiate-best time of 13.55 in the women’s 100m hurdles. The hurdler finished sixth overall and fourth collegiately in a field of 22. Teammate Rebecca Oshinbanjo notched a 12th-place finish with a time of 13.90.

Junior Shakeem Smith crossed the finish line with a season-best time of 14.14 in the 110m hurdles, finishing fifth overall. Smith went on to compete in the 400m hurdles and crossed the finish line fourth with a time of 52.91.

Junior Madison Gibson also notched a season-best time of 55.01 in the 400m. She finished ninth overall in a field of 28 competitors.

Iason Machairas finished fifth overall and third collegiately in the men’s shot put. The freshman notched a mark of 17.74m in his final attempt of the night.

Highlighting the jumpers was Chantoba Bright in the long jump. The freshman finished fourth overall in a field of 20 competitors. Her best attempt was her first jump of 5.94m.

On the men’s side, Darius King won the triple jump with a personal-best mark of 14.95m. He also finished eighth with a personal-best leap of 6.93m in the long jump on his first attempt of the day.

The Miners will return to the track on May 9-12 in Charlotte, N.C. for the 2019 C-USA Outdoor Championships.
