Miners end opening day at Missouri State in first place

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The UTEP Women’s Golf team finished the first two rounds of play at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial atop the leaderboard in first place at Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield.

In the opening round, UTEP shot 291 (+7) as a team during the first 18 holes on Monday morning. The Miners continued to lead the pack in the second round in the afternoon, shooting 298 as a group to finish the day in first place (+21) Round three is set for Tuesday morning with a shotgun start scheduled for 7:30 a.m. MT.

Juniors Audrey Haddad and Valeria Mendizabal raced out to the front of the field in the first two rounds of the tournament. Haddad finished the day in first place after shooting a 3-under-par 68 over the opening 18 holes and 73 (+2) in the second.

As for her teammate, Mendizabal finished the day in second place with a 2-over-par performance after shooting 69 and 75 over the first 36 holes.

UTEP’s Shannon O’Dwyer finished the first day tied for 19th with scores of 75 and 76 in the first two rounds, while Crystal Wu shot 154 (80, 74). Abbie Anghelescu rounded out the group for the Miners, shooting 155 on the day with scores of 79 and 76 in rounds one and two, respectively.
