The Miners dropped their final match of the season versus NM State, 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-21) on Wednesday.
Talia Jones led the squad with 10 kills while Dalainee Perry followed with six. Helping protect the net was Tatum Winter, who posted two solo blocks, five block assists and five kills. Setter Lindsey Larson recorded 24 assists and seven digs and Sarah Villa tallied 12 digs.
UTEP (9-23, 3-13 C-USA) totaled 39 digs, 30 kills, 29 assists and 11 total team blocks, but it was not enough as NM State hammered 48 kills, 45 assists and 43 digs to outlast the Miners.
At the start of the first set, NM State took an early 5-2 lead before UTEP battled back from the deficit tying the frame 8-8. The Aggies responded with a 4-1 run to make it 12-9. The squads would trade points, until a 5-0 run sealed the set for the Aggies, 25-23.
Both teams battled for control of the second frame, as the set saw seven ties and two lead changes. With the score tied at 16-16, NM State picked up the pace with a 6-2 run. Jones would fight back for the Miners with a kill to bring UTEP within three at 22-19. Back-to-back attack errors gave the Miners two more set points but the Aggies would ultimately take the set, 25-21.
UTEP took an early advantage in the third with a 7-2 run led by Jones who posted three consecutive kills. The Aggies stormed out to an 8-3 run to tie the score at 10-10. NM State’s momentum continued as it put together a 6-2 run to make it 16-12. The Miners would come back with a couple of team kills but the Aggies prevailed with one last kill by Gwen Murphy.
With its final game in the books, UTEP concludes the 2015 season 9-23 overall and 3-13 in Conference USA.
