TUCSON – The UTEP Men’s Golf team closed out play at the Arizona Intercollegiate on Monday with a ninth-place finish at the Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson.
“I was awfully pleased with our performance for the most part,” head coach Scott Lieberwirth said. “We did a lot of really good things the last few days. We made some birdies and hit some good shots out there. There were some mistakes that didn’t allow us to get under par like I felt we were capable of, but overall, for it being our first event out, the guys competed hard and definitely have some momentum to build on.”
Overall, UTEP finished the tournament in ninth place after shooting 18-over with a team total of 870 (290-292-288), while Miners registered their best score of the week (+4) in Tuesday’s final round.
The Miners began the day by finishing out the second round, which was called due to darkness on Monday evening. UTEP finished the second round of golf with a team total of 292 (+8) before posting their best round over the last 18 holes.
UTEP had two players finish tied for 23rd individually in Santiago Castilla (70-75-71=216) and Greg Yellin (71-74-71=216), who each finished the tournament at 3-over par.
Senior Eduardo Gonzalez wrapped up the event at 5-over par with a three-round total of 218 (74-71-73) to finish tied for 31st.
UTEP’s Danny Daniels finished the day shooting a 73 (+2), while the newcomer shot 7-over par (75-72-73) over the course of three rounds to tie for 44th. Oskar Ambrosius rounded out the Miners’ five-man lineup at 13-over with a three-round total of 226 (75-75-76).
The Miners return to the links Feb. 9-10 at the 2020 Cactus Thaw, which will be hosted by Western New Mexico at Painted Dunes Golf Course in El Paso.
