MARICOPA, Az. – The UTEP women’s golf team surged its way to the top of the field at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on Monday.
The Orange and Blue shot a 10-over par 589 to finish two stokes ahead of Santa Clara and I-10 rivals NM State (588), as both are tied for second place.
Sophomore Valeria Mendizabal (70-70) leads the Miners and sits in fourth place through 36 holes. Mendizabal finished with a 4-under 140, trailing the leader Suthavee Chanachai (NM State) who closed out the first day with an 8-under 136 (67-69).
Senior Lily Downs (77-68) finished tied for 11th overall shooting 1-over par 145. Audrey Haddad (76-72) put together a 4-over par 148 to sit tied for 21st overall. Crystal Wu (77-76) scored a 9-over par 153 putting her tied for 54th place. Shannon O’Dwyer (80-82) rounded out the team tied for 96th overall with an 18-over par 162.
The Miners will start the final round Tuesday with a 7:30 a.m. MT shotgun start.
