KYLE, Texas – The UTEP women’s golf team opened the spring season with a ninth-place finish at the Texas State Invitational on Tuesday in Kyle, Texas.
“The team played will the first two rounds but didn’t handle the tough conditions today,” UTEP head coach Jere Pelletier said. “We need to practice and prepare better for the next tournament in March.”
The Miners fired rounds of 294, 286 and 311 for a total of 891. The top eight teams were UTSA (284-285-285—854), Kansas State (295-284-295—874), Tulsa (290-287-298—875), HBU (292-285-302—879), Texas State (282-288-310—880), Oral Roberts (282-294-305—881), Sam Houston State (292-291-299-882) and Cal State Fullerton (294-286-311—885).
Two Miners placed in the top 25 of the individual standings at the tournament, which featured a total of 15 teams participating. Lily Downs tied for 18th place with a six-over-par 219. Crystal Wu finished tied for 15th overall, shooting a nine-over-par 222.
Valeria Mendizabal notched a 40th-place finish with a 14-over-par 226. Naomi Ramirez secured a 54th-place finish scoring a 16 –over-par 229. Rounding out the Miners was Abbie Anghelescu, who tied for 58th place with an 18-over-par 231.
The individual champion was Sam Houston State’s Hannah Alberto, who shot six-under-par 207 (70-68-69).
The Orange and Blue will return to action at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational March 12-13 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
