Miners finish third at Wyoming Intercollegiate

PALM DESERT, Ca. – The UTEP Women’s Golf wrapped up the final round of action at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate in third place on Sunday at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, California.

On Sunday’s third and final round, the UTEP Miners shot 324 as a team and ended the event just two shots off the leader and eventual winner, Cal Poly (+61). The Miners posted a three-round total of 927 (304-299-324).

UTEP had two top 10 finishes individually with junior Valeria Mendizabal leading the way with a second-place finish. Mendizabal ended the third with a score of 221 (+5) after shooting 74, 72 and 75 over the three rounds.

Additionally, UTEP’s Audrey Haddad tied for seventh out of 63 golfers after she posted scores of 75, 75 and 80 for a three-round total of 230 (+14).

During Saturday’s opening round, UTEP shot 304 (+16) as a team during the first 18 holes to finish the morning in third place. The Miners shot 300 as a unit over the next 18 holes to finish the day in second place (+27) behind Cal Poly with a team total of 604 before the final round on Sunday.

Abbie Anghelescu (79-74-85) and Andrea Ostos (76-78-84) ended the weekend tied for 22nd after the two teammates both shot 238 (+22) this weekend. Crystal Wu (81-80-85) finished out the 54-hole event for the Miners with a three-round total of 246 (+30)

UTEP returns to the links next Monday, Oct. 7 when the Miners make the short trip to Las Cruces, New Mexico, to compete in the New Mexico State Aggie Invitational.
