Miners Hit the Islands for John A. Burns Invitational

LIJU’E, Kaua’i – The UTEP Men’s Golf team will spend this week on island time as the Miners travel to compete in the 44th John A. Burns Intercollegiate, which is hosted by the University of Hawaii.

UTEP will compete among a 21-team field Feb. 20-22 in Lihu’e, Kaua’i. The three-day, 54-hole event is being held at the par-72, 6,991-yard Wailua Golf Course with an 8 a.m. HT (11 a.m. MT) shotgun start each day.

Participating teams will play 18 holes each day of the event.

The Miners will be one of 21 teams competing in this year’s John A. Burns Intercollegiate, along with Arizona, BYU, California, Cal State Fullerton, GCU, Illinois, Long Beach State, UNM, North Carolina, N. Colorado, Saint Mary’s, Santa Clara, Texas A&M, UC Irvine, UNC Wilmington, UNLV, Utah, Virginia and Washington State.

The Arizona Wildcats return as the defending team champion from last year, while BYU’s Peter Kuest took home the individual title in 2019.

  • Jacob Presutti (Fr., Ontario, Canada)

The UTEP Men’s Golf team closed out play at the Arizona Intercollegiate at the end of January with a ninth-place finish at the Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson, Arizona.

Overall, UTEP finished the tournament in ninth place after shooting 18-over with a team total of 870 (290-292-288), while Miners registered their best score of the week (+4) in the final round.

UTEP had two players finish tied for 23rd individually in Santiago Castilla (70-75-71=216) and Greg Yellin (71-74-71=216), who each finished the tournament at 3-over par.

Senior Eduardo Gonzalez wrapped up the event at 5-over par with a three-round total of 218 (74-71-73) to finish tied for 31st.

UTEP’s Danny Daniels finished the day shooting a 73 (+2), while the newcomer shot 7-over par (75-72-73) over the course of three rounds to tie for 44th. Oskar Ambrosius rounded out the Miners’ five-man lineup at 13-over with a three-round total of 226 (75-75-76).
