The UTEP men’s golf team shot an opening round three-over par 291 on day one of the National Invitational Tournament at the Omni Tucson National-Catalina Course on Sunday morning.
The Miners are in 12th place of the 14 team field and Santa Clara and Nevada are tied atop the leaderboard at 10-under par apiece (278).
A pair of Miners find themselves inside the top 10 after day one. Junior Frederik Dreier (tied fifth) fired an opening round three-under par 69. His round included six birdies, nine pars and three bogeys. Andreas Sorenson (tied ninth) is one stroke off of Dreier’s pace; the Denmark native had a steady round one with three birdies, 14 pars and only one bogey.
Charlie Corner is tied for 52nd place at three-over par (75), Prescott Mann is in 68th place at five-over par (77) and Ben Getman is 80th at 11-over par (83).
Nicklas Pihl, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 39th after carding a one-over par 73.
Round two will begin Monday morning at 8 a.m. (MT)
