TUCSON – The UTEP Men’s Golf team wrapped up the opening day of the Arizona Intercollegiate in sixth place on Monday at the Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson, Arizona.
As a team, the Miners finished the first round of the event in ninth place at 6-over-par with a team total of 290, while UTEP moved up three spots on the leaderboard during the second round, but was not able to finish play on Monday afternoon due to darkness. The Miners shot 4-over as a team through 17 holes in the second round, which will be concluded on Tuesday morning.
The Miners had two players finish tied for 21st individually with Eduardo Gonzalez and Greg Yellin each shooting 2-over par for the day. Gonzalez shot 3-over (74) in the first round before shooting 1-under through 17 holes in the second.
Santiago Castilla led the way in the opening round, finishing in a tie for 14th after shooting 1-under par (70) before shooting 4-over through 17 holes during the second round of golf. Yellin ended the day in a tie for 21st after shooting par (71) in the first round and 2-over with one hole left to play in the second.
Newcomer Danny Daniels finished the day tied for 28th after shooting 75 (+4) in the first round and 1-under with one hole remaining in the second round.
UTEP’s Oskar Ambrosius closed out the day tied for 55th after shooting 8-over with scores of 75 (+4) in the first round and 4-over through most of the second round. Jacob Presutti, who is competing as an individual at this week’s Arizona Intercollegiate, finished the opening round with a score of 81 (+10).
UTEP will wrap up the remainder of the second round on Tuesday morning before following up with the final round of play later in the day.
