The UTEP tennis team jumped to a quick lead by claiming the doubles point and never looked back, taking down Angelo State 5-2 on Friday at the El Paso Tennis and Swim Club. The win moved the Miners to 6-10 on the season, while Angelo State is now 12-5.
“It was a great group effort today,” head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “It was one of the first times in a while that we really had everybody come together and it was really exciting to hear all the cheering and all the energy from all six courts.”
Freshman duo Erandi Martinez and Milena Baigorria, paired together for the first time this season, dominated the Belles’ Melanie Dreux and Lucie Maitrot 6-3 at the no. 3 doubles position, while Maria Paula Medina and Yvette van Oijen pulled out a 6-4 win at the no. 2 spot over Virginie Becht and Zoe Gubbels to seal the doubles point for the Miners. Angelo State got a win on court one at the no. 1 position, as Lois Wagenvoort and Raven Bennett fell 6-3 to Maria Delgadillo and Ena Ovcina.
With the advantage in the match, UTEP kept its momentum into singles play as five Miners notched set one wins leading to four singles victories. Bennett, playing no. 2 in the lineup, made quick work of Yasmine Ansari 6-3, 6-0, while Martinez followed with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Zoe Gubbels at the no. 3 position to notch her 19th win of the year. Baigorria, playing on court no. 6, remained flawless in dual match play after slipping by Melanie Dreux 6-3, 7-6. With her match-clinching win, Baigorria is now 4-0 on the spring season. Medina pulled out a 6-4, 4-6, 10-2 win at the no. 4 position over the Belles’ Virginie Becht as the matches played out.
Yvette van Oijen, serving the game-clinching point in her match, was forced to retire due to injury during play. Van Oijen won the first set 6-2, but dropped set two 6-2, and was leading 5-4 in set three before sustaining her injury.
“We never want to finish a match like this with somebody getting injured, it’s very painful to watch that happen,” Fernandez said. “[Yvette] showed a lot of heart by trying to finish the match and doing everything she could for the good of the team.”
Lois Wagenvoort, playing at the top of the lineup, dropped a close match against Maria Delgadillo on court one. Wagenvoort stayed competitive throughout the match, but slipped 7-5, 7-6.
“I’m impressed with how hard Lois fought all the way to the end,” Fernandez said. “Raven played a great match, she’s been kind of on the edge these last couple of matches so I’m glad she was able to get over the hump and really finish out in a decisive way. I’m really proud of how everybody fought and how they came together. It really shows that they care about the team and they care about each other. We’re just hoping we can get some quick recovery time and be ready for the Lobos tomorrow.”
The Miners will return to action tomorrow when they host New Mexico. First serve against the Lobos is set for 12 p.m. at the El Paso Tennis and Swim Club, admission is free.
