Miners softball splits doubleheader against Odessa

The UTEP softball team fell 11-9 to Odessa in game one, but rallied in game two during a 12-0 win Friday night at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex.

The Wranglers had a seven-run fourth inning highlighted by an Alyssa Hanks three-run home run and a Mariah Jameyson two-run shot. But the Miners scored seven in the final frame as Miranda Gutierrez and Kiki Pepi each recorded a pair of RBI.

The rally fell short in the first game however, but the Miners used that momentum in the second contest. UTEP used a seven-run inning during the fourth to blow the game open. Hope Moreno recorded two RBI, while Anna O’Connor, Kaitlin Ryder and Linda Garcia notched an RBI apiece. Garcia tallied two during the game.

The game was put away in the fifth inning, as the Miners tacked on three more runs. Gutierrez and Yvette Ortega each tallied an RBI.

Pepi finished the series with four hits (two doubles), two runs, three walks and three RBI.

UTEP will return to action on Oct. 3, as it hosts Sul Ross (12:20 p.m.) and El Paso Community College (2:40 p.m.). Admission is free for all fans.
