Miners take fourth in nationally ranked field; knock off Georgetown

Louisville, Ky.- The UTEP men’s team knocked off the 10th-ranked Georgetown Hoyas on their way to a fourth-place team finish in a field of 42 teams, 11 of which were ranked inside the top 30 at Pre Nationals.

No. 1 Colorado won the team title with 89 points, No. 3 Oregon followed with 151 points, and No. 12 ranked Arkansas (164 points) edged out UTEP (197 points) by 33 points.

Anthony Rotich (23:23.5) and freshman standout Jonah Koech (23:24.3) ran an outstanding race and placed third and fourth in a field of 288 runners.

Junior Cosmas Boit dashed to a 37th-place showing with a personal best 8K time of 23:50.0. Daniel Cheruiyot was the fourth Miner to cross the finish line in 57th place with a personal best time of 24:02.6 to demolish his old personal best by nearly 20 seconds.

Antony Kosgei registered a personal best as well with a time of 24:17.9 to earn a 96th-place finish. Evans Kiprono (25:24.8) rounded out the effort for the men’s team by finishing in 262nd place.


The women, who ran in the unseeded race, worked their way to a 19th-place showing out of 35 teams.

Two underclassmen, Lilian Koech and Joan Jepkirui, were inspirational with how they ran. Koech, who was running her first-career 6K race, finished 13th with a time of 21:10.7. Jepkirui was not too far off of Koech’s pace and earned an 18th-place showing with a readout of 21:14.7.

Gladys Jerotich, anothing promising freshman, notched a 28th-place finish with a time of 21:27.9. Truphena Sum clocked a time of 23:36.6 to cross the finishline in 199th place.

Lilliana Valdespino smoked her previous career best by over a minute and finished with a time of 26:16.6. Yara Cortez-Alaniz finished her 6K in 27:56.2.
