UTEP XC to Host only Home Meet Friday at Chamizal Memorial National Park

The Miners will host the Lori Fitzgerald Classic at the Chamizal Memorial National Park this Friday at 5:45 p.m.This will be the only meet hosted by UTEP cross country for the 2016 season.

UTEP will be hosting NM State, and El Paso Community College. Men’s teams will be running a 6.4K and women’s teams will be running a 4.7K race.

Cosmas Boit, who was named C-USA Athlete of the Week by the league on Tuesday, will be looking to continue upon his success from the first meet of the 2016 season. Boit was the first to cross the finish line last weekend in Albuquerque, N.M. This will be his fourth time running in the Lori Fitzgerald.

At last year’s meet the men dominated as they garnered the top-six finishing spots, while the women placed four runners in the top-six.

On the men’s side the Miners all finished at nearly the same time. Daniel Cheruiyot and Antony Kosgei were both awarded with first and second place for a 6.5K time of 20:18.1. Cosmas Boit, Evans Kiprono, and Jonah Koech tailed right behind the first two runners, clocking in at only a one-hundredth of a second difference time of 20:18.2.

The women’s team also had an impressive performance in last year’s meet.

Lilian Koech claimed her first career cross country race with a 5K time of 17:19.6 last year at the 2015 Lori Fitzgerald Classic. Gladys Jerotich crossed the finish line right after to earn second place with a time of 17:24.7. Truphena Sum also finished inside of the top five with a fourth-place finish with a time of 22:02.97.

The Orange and Blue will strive to perform as well as they did last weekend at the Lobo Invitational. The Miners took both individual and team titles to open the season with high performing success.
