Story+Gallery: Undefeated Monterrey Rolls; Flash Top Coyotes 8-4,

The El Paso Coyotes put up a fight against one of the best teams in the Major Arena Soccer League, but came up short, losing to the undefeated Monterrey Flash.

The Coyotes, currently in second place in the Southwest Division, dropped their third game of the season, losing 8-4 to the top-ranked Flash on Thursday at the El Paso County Coliseum.

El Paso falls to 5-3, while Monterrey keeps its unbeaten streak alive, moving to 7-0 atop the Southwest Division. The Coyotes played most of the game without their starting goalkeeper Jesus Molina, who went down in the second quarter with a leg injury.

Midfielder Marco Gonzalez was forced to step into goal since backup Jorge Nava was not on the 15-man roster for the game. El Paso’s only goals came from midfielder Christian Gutierrez with two, and forward Daniel Frias and defender Diego Salas with one each. Gutierrez, who has 14 goals on the season, continues to rank among the top scorers in the league.

Monterrey, one of only three undefeated teams in the league, was guided by forward Edgar González with two goals. The Flash led 4-2 at halftime.

The Coyotes now hit the road, visiting Monterrey on December 17, the Soles de Sonora on Dec. 21 and back to Monterrey on January 7. They return home for a match against the Soles at 7:35 p.m. January 12 in the Coliseum.

Tickets, which cost $5, $10, $15 and $25, are available at the Coliseum Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 800-745-3000 and online.
