The 8th annual NAMIWalks El Paso benefiting the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Paso (NAMI El Paso) will be taking place September 22 at Memorial Park Reserve.
This year, Kristi Daugherty, CEO of Emergence Health Network (the local mental health authority), is the NAMIWalks Chair and has helped outreach within Emergence Health Network and across business leaders in the County.
“The walk gives many El Pasoans the opportunity to show their support for NAMI El Paso, as well as those individuals affected by mental health conditions, by raising funds and awareness,” says Jim Jopling, NAMI El Paso Board President. “Many of those who walk with us walk for their brothers, sister, cousins, mom, dad, and themselves. Everyone has a story and we are happy to give them a platform to start a conversation about mental health and tell their story.”
Two of the main goals of the Walk is to bring awareness of mental health to the community in order to erase the stigma and provide a positive platform to have those important discussions.
Last year, NAMIWalks El Paso 2017 had an attendance of over 500 individuals. One in five US adults live with a mental health condition, and through NAMIWalks, a lot of them speak out and help others who are too afraid to talk.
Registration for the walk is free online, however, donations are encouraged as all fund raised from NAMIWalks El Paso are channeled to NAMI El Paso’s mission to “provide advocacy, education, support and public awareness, so that all individuals and families affected by mental health conditions can build better lives.”
The organization offers free educational programs, presentations, and support groups for El Pasoans with mental health conditions and their loved ones.
NAMIWalks El Paso has already raised $56,854.99, only less than 25% away from their goal of $75,000.
