Nepal University Honors Retired UTEP Instructor

The head of online learning at Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu, Nepal, presented the Award for Service to retired UTEP faculty member Carolyn Awalt, Ph.D., for her ongoing efforts to instruct Nepalese faculty how to teach online courses.

Awalt, an award-winning pioneer in online learning who taught in the College of Education, spent part of this past summer at Tribhuvan and the nearby Open University of Nepal to instruct about 40 faculty members who represented the fields of mathematics, business, sociology and political science.

Lekhnath Sharma, Ph.D., vice chancellor for open and distance education, presented the award to Awalt, who plans to return to the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal to continue her instruction in March 2018.

This was Awalt’s second time to the Himalayan country. She first visited there after completing her Peace Corps assignment in India in the late 1960s.

The longtime educator spent 20 years in higher education with the last 15 of those at UTEP. In retirement, she continues to teach online computer science courses for the University of Maryland, and is vice president of the Insight Science Center Board of Directors.
