New Date, Route, and Title Sponsor Announced for Celebration of Lights

On Friday, the Parks and Recreation Department announced a new date, a new route and a new title sponsor for the annual Celebration of Lights parade and lighting ceremony that is part of the expanded El Paso WinterFest season.

The local law firm of Jim Scherr and Sam Legate stepped up to sponsor the City’s only light parade that will now be known as the Scherr Legate Presents Celebration of Lights Parade.

”Scherr Legate specializes in helping people, and we are extremely honored to sponsor this event for the city we love, particularly for the benefit of the children,” said Scherr Legate Partner Sam Legate.

The parade date has been changed to November 18 with a start time of 5:00 p.m. The parade route has been extended a half mile for a total of 1.5 miles.

The new route incorporates part of the Segundo Barrio neighborhood and the famed Paseo de Las Luces (El Paso Street) that is currently under renovation. The parade starts on Texas Street, winds through Segundo Barrio and Paseo de las Luces, through San Jacinto Plaza, and then continues back to Texas Street.

The nighttime parade features more than 60 attractions and walking groups adorned in lights.

The traditional lighting of San Jacinto Plaza is set for 5:55 p.m. as Mayor Dee Margo and Jase Canales of Candlelighters of El Paso flip the ceremonial switch with the Celebration of Lights Parade to follow.

San Jacinto Plaza will be filled with more than 400,000 mini lights adorning 120 trees, along with a 30-foot tower tree filled with holiday decorations. The large 55 ft. living tree, donated by Corrine Boyce in 1998 in memory of her late husband Charles “Chuck” Boyce, also provides a historic backdrop.

The lights at San Jacinto Plaza will shine daily from 5:30 p.m. through 1 a.m. through January 6.

KVIA ABC-7 will broadcast the Celebration of Lights parade and festivities live on the CW and KVIA.com.  Entertainment will continue through 11 p.m. with seasonal festivities that include music, vendors, an outdoor ice-skating rink and more.

The Scherr Legate Presents Celebration of Lights Parade is part of El Paso WinterFest presented by Hospitals of Providence and Providence Children’s Hospital that will run from November 18 to January 6.

More information on the parade and El Paso WinterFest is available online. Stay up-to-date through various social media sites and following the hashtags #epwinterfest and #iamelpaso.
