Ryan Schimpf hit his third home run in three games but the El Paso Chihuahuas fell to the New Orleans Baby Cakes 4-2 in Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader. El Paso’s other run came on a bases loaded balk by New Orleans starter Mike Kickham.
The teams played two doubleheaders in the series, making up for rainouts on Thursday and Saturday.
Kyle Lloyd allowed four runs in the first inning but then faced the minimum number of batters over the next five innings in a complete game loss.
In the second game, New Orleans starter Justin Nicolino pitched six shutout innings in the Baby Cakes’ 5-1 win in Game 2. Peter Van Gansen went 3-for-3 with an RBI double in the loss. Van Gansen is hitting .333 in his first 13 games with El Paso.
New Orleans won the series three games to one. The Chihuahuas have dropped three consecutive series and nine of their last 12 games.
Sunday was El Paso’s fifth doubleheader of the season, with four coming on the road.
