NM approves $50k feasibility study for Insights’ DinoTrack site

NM State senator Jeff Steinborn and NM State Representative Raymundo Lara successfully championed a 2019 state budget addition to fund a feasibility study of Insights 211-acre DinoTracks site as a Trail Hub of the Rio Grande trail and outdoor recreation resource.

El Pasoans will also benefit from New Mexico’s outdoor recreational renaissance.  Thanks to a statewide revenue boon, the 2019 New Mexico State Budget supported a $50,000 feasibility study to lay a roadmap for the construction of an outdoor recreation site and trail hub for the Rio Grande Trail at Insights Dino Tracks site in Sunland Park, New Mexico.

“Thanks to the consistent support of State Senator Jeff Steinborn, Insights is finally on track to develop the 211-acre DinoTracks site in Sunland Park to its full potential,” Insights Museum officials shared.

New Mexico State Parks will collaborate with Insights El Paso Science Center to determine the vision for an enhanced outdoor education and recreation site.

Following the discovery of thousands of fossilized dinosaur footprints by Dr. Eric Kappus in 2002, the DinoTracks site was donated to Insights El Paso Science Center by Stanley Jobe.

Since its donation, Insights has collaborated with a multiple organizations to build a 2.5 mile guided hiking tour through 10 different educational stops.

Museum officials added, “DinoTrack guided hikes are the first phase of Insights larger vision to create multiple active outdoor STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) learning opportunities throughout the Border Region.”

Insights provides over 1,400 guided hiking tours of fossilized dinosaur tracks to children and adults annually.
