Youth from across New Mexico had the opportunity to show their small animals at the Youth Small Animal Expo held September 25-26 in Albuquerque.
New Mexico State University’s (NMSU) Cooperative Extension Service Sandoval County agents and small group of volunteers worked together to organize and host the event.
“At the end of the day, win or lose, the youth will have gained self-confidence and the satisfaction of accomplishing a huge goal,” said Steve Lucero, Sandoval County 4-H agent. “Congratulations to all our exhibitors.”
The Youth Small Animal Expo included more than 275 rabbit and poultry entries.
“It was a great organized event that was a lot of fun and laid back. Everyone came together to help each other out. That’s what 4-H and FFA are—community and togetherness,” said Shauncey Cordova, a 15 year old exhibitor.
Valencia County 4-H volunteer Cassidy Cordova said she was happy to see the community rally to offer youth the chance to showcase months of hard work. Her children had fun during their first year exhibiting their small animals, she added.
“Many of the volunteers do not have kids involved in the program but they understand the importance that we are raising our future leaders,” Cassidy Cordova said. “As volunteers, we will go above and beyond to provide youth with all the opportunities we can.”
“The expo would not have been possible without our sponsors, volunteers and judges,” Lucero said.
