NMSU Dance Program to Showcase Passion for Flamenco, Spanish Dance

The flamenco and Spanish dance program at New Mexico State University will host two performances later this month to fund its third trip to Spain.

“Viva España” promises to be a “passionate evening” of eclectic flamenco and Spanish dance performed by Sol Y Arena, the flamenco and Spanish dance ensemble of NMSU’s dance program. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. April 23 and 2:30 p.m. April 24 at the Rio Grande Theater 211 N. Main Street in Las Cruces. Tickets are $10 for students and seniors, and $15 for adults.

Students in the flamenco and Spanish dance program will travel to Spain this summer for a month. This will be the third trip directed by Paco Antonio and Lucilene de Geus, the co-directors of Sol Y Arena and faculty members in the NMSU dance program, which is housed in the College of Education Department of Kinesiology and Dance.

“The flamenco and Spanish dance focus at NMSU is a curriculum programmed to create a plan of action for those who want to pursue a professional life as a flamenco or Spanish dance artist,” Antonio said. “The large body of technique we present in all forms and structures along with choreographic concentration lead into the pedagogical methods that enable the student to apply a practical focus throughout a wide cross-section of organizations and venues both public and private.”

Antonio said the opportunity for flamenco and Spanish dance students to study for a month in Spain offers an extremely rich experience in the classroom with celebrated international instructors, theater and tablao, or nightclub setting, performances.

“Students take daily walks through historic landmarks and museums, and return with inspiring choreographies and rich memories to be shared and motivate the next generation of voyagers,” Antonio said.
