North Texas doubles up UTEP 4-2

DENTON, Texas – The UTEP softball team (12-22, 2-9 Conference USA) fell to North Texas (20-7, 9-2 C-USA) 4-2 in game two of the series Saturday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium.

The Mean Green broke a 1-1 tie, scoring two runs in the fifth then one in the sixth to down the Miners. UNT gave up one last run to UTEP in the seventh.

The Mean Green were first on the board in the bottom of the first as Kailey Gamble hit an RBI single to left field scoring Kalei Christensen who singled and swiped second earlier in the inning.

The Miners answered with their own RBI single in the second frame. Anna Sample and Pate Cathey drew back-to-back walks and Cheyenne Stark took over first base as she was hit on her first pitch to load the bases. Savannah Favre singled to second base plating Sample to tie up the game, 1-1.

UNT put up two more runs in the fifth after back-to-back doubles to center field, then Molly Rainey recorded a home run over right field in the sixth to extend the lead, 4-1.

UTEP’s rally in the seventh was a little too late as UNT only allowed one run. The Miners had the bases loaded once again after Zaylie Calderon reached on a fielder’s choice and Toni Gonzalez, who pinch hit for Aaliyah Rebolledo, and Lexi Morales both drew walks. This forced a pitching change for the Mean Green with Skylar Savage, the winning pitcher from game one of the series, relieved lead pitcher Ashley Peters.

With one out, Marijn Crouwel’s groundout to first base allowed Calderon to score, but Savage followed by striking out Sample to end the game, 4-2.

Double Trouble

The Miners matched the programs best record of double plays in a single game, recording three in today’s contest. Pate Cathey registered an unassisted double play in the bottom of the second that ended the Mean Green’s attempt to rally and sent them back into the dugout. Savannah Favre and Anna Sample ended the third inning in double play fashion holding UNT to no runs once again.

Cheyenne Stark, Cathey and Sample recorded the final double play of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
