Denton, Texas- The UTEP volleyball team battled North Texas in a tight match, but the Mean Green picked up a 3-1 victory in the North Texas Volleyball Arena on Thursday.
Talia Jones led the offense with 18 kills while Sarah Villa notched 22 digs. Junior Tatum Winter contributed five blocks and six digs to the Miner’s defensive efforts. Setter Lindsey Larson notched her 15th double-double of the season with 34 assists and 11 digs and added five kills and four blocks.
North Texas (15-11, 7-4 C-USA) set the tone in the first set with a service Ace from Alex Janak to lead, 1-0. UTEP (7-19, 1-10 C-USA) kept the match close until the Mean Green fired off a 4-0 run to extend their lead, 19-10. North Texas ended the set with a kill by Alexis Wright to win, 25-17.
The Mean Green opened the second set with a 3-1 run. The Orange and Blue fought back and tied the score nine times before North Texas capped a 25-20 set victory.
UTEP opened the third set with a 5-0 run to force a North Texas timeout. The Miners led 21-13 before a kill by Dillard sparked an 8-1 run for the Mean Green. The Orange and Blue responded two continuous set points and ultimately claimed the third stanza, 25-22.
Both teams fought point for point in the fourth set as the score saw 12 ties and four lead changes. An error by the North Texas tied the score at 25 but it scored two set points to win the final frame, 27-25.
The Miners will return to Memorial Gym on Sunday to face No. 22 Western Kentucky at 2 p.m. (MT).
