Northeast drive-by shooting investigation leads to two arrests, one suspect still sought

Members of the El Paso Police SWAT Unit arrested two men Monday, one of whom were wanted in connection to a drive-by shooting.

According to police, the drive-by happened on August 7th along the  5300 block of La Taste in Northeast El Paso, luckily no one was injured.

Early Monday, SWAT Unit members executed simultaneous raids at two Northeast residences, one at 10020 Kenworthy and the other at 10466 Hodges, after two suspects involved in the shooting were identified and arrest warrants, as well as  search warrants, for the addresses on were obtained.

Officials say that 22-year old Michael Murphy was taken into custody by the Gang Unit without incident shortly after leaving the residence on Hodges. Police say that while the search warrants were being executed, the second suspect- 19-year-old Victor Mata – was spotted in the area, riding in a blue Toyota Tacoma driven by 20-year old Samuel Lewis.

Police alleged that Lewis and Mata quickly left the area, but crashed  some distance away. Officers found the truck, moments after it had crashed and Lewis was apprehended in the area. Mata managed to escape before police arrived.

Officials say that 19-year-old Victor Mata is wanted for Engaging In Organized Criminal Activity-Aggravated Assault with a deadly weapon.

Police ask anyone with information on Mata’s whereabouts to call police at (915) 832-4400 or, to remain anonymous and possibly qualify for a cash reward, they can contact Crime Stoppers of El Paso at 915-566-8477.
