“A lot of people were scared of the ball,” Palacios said of why she became a soccer goalie. “It came to me more naturally. I was already kind of catching it when I was younger. Also, my older sister was a goalie first and I wanted to be like my bigger sister. Once I was put at (goalie) I didn’t want to go anywhere else.”
IRVING, Tx – Junior Alyssa Palacios has been voted as the Conference USA Women’s Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week, the league office revealed Monday afternoon. It is the third such honor of her career.
Palacios recorded six saves, including a stop in a one-vs.one situation, to help the UTEP soccer team post a thrilling 1-0 win in the C-USA opener for both squads at Southern Miss Sunday. Palacios was rock solid throughout the entire contest, but particularly in the first half when she was called upon to make five saves alone.
“Alyssa was the MVP of the game on Sunday,” UTEP head coach Kevin Cross said. “She made three big time saves that kept us in that game. We would not have won that game without her outstanding performance. This honor is much deserved and she is a huge reason for a shut-out against a very high powered Southern Miss attack.”
Her efforts helped the Miners claim their league lid lifter and fifth straight game overall.
