Parks and Recreation to Host Mexican Independence Day Celebration

The City of El Paso Parks and Recreation Department invites the public to a free Mexican Independence Day Celebration at 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 16, at San Jacinto Plaza.

The celebration includes the traditional “Grito” commemoration led by the Mexican Consul Marcos Bucio Mujica and El Paso Mayor Dee Margo, which is scheduled for 10:15 p.m.

Entertainment includes Hugo Cortes, an impersonator of the late singer Juan Gabriel, along with folklorico groups, mariachi bands and other performing artists. Arts and crafts booths, a children’s zone and food trucks are also part of the festivities.

Mexican Independence Day marks September 16, 1810, the day when priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla urged Mexicans to rise up against the colonial government of Spain. The call today is referred to as the Grito de Dolores, or Cry of Dolores, named after the town of Dolores where the cry was originally made.

Visitors are encouraged to bring chairs to this free, family-friendly event. San Jacinto Plaza is a dog-leash friendly park that has as a splash pad, horseshoe and washer pits, and chess and table tennis.

For more information, call the El Paso Parks and Recreation Department at (915) 212-0092 or click HERE.
