The Ysleta ISD Board of Trustees honored Pebble Hills Elementary School students and brothers Zakchariah and Tyler Hernandez, who serve as leaders and role models in both kindness and academics.
Zak, who is in second grade, has been a huge supporter of the school’s new “Caught Being Kind” program, which is part of the district’s Random Acts of Kindness campaign.
YISD officials share, “Every day, Zak makes a point to nominate as many as three or four students for “Caught Being Kind”– this entails filling out a form with the student’s name, a description of their act of kindness, and their teacher’s name…the fact that Zak seeks to highlight the kindness, compassion, and thoughtfulness of others every day is evidence of his generous nature.”
Zak’s older brother, Tyler, is a fifth-grader who is known among his peers for being respectful and well-behaved. Tyler is also at the top of his class academically, and will be deeply missed when he moves next year to middle school.
District officials add, “Together, the Hernandez brothers are a treasured part of the Pebble Hills campus, and they serve as exceptional role models in all areas: academics, service, citizenship, and leadership.”
The President’s Award is given by the President of the Board of Trustees to a YISD student who has demonstrated exceptional and/or innovative, out-of-the-ordinary service to others, particularly those within the YISD community. This award will be presented to the selected recipient a maximum of once per month during the regularly scheduled meeting of the YISD Board of Trustees.
Eligible YISD students must be nominated for the award by a school principal, assistant principal, or Trustee; and must be in good academic and disciplinary standing.
