Rep. Veronica Escobar Shares Resources, Information for Furloughed Federal Employees

Via a tweet late Tuesday afternoon, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar shared a page with resources for El Paso-area Federal Employees who have been furloughed as a result of the ongoing government shutdown.

The list, compiled and cross-linked on a page at Congresswoman Escobar’s website is reposted below.

ACCESS TO CAPITAL

Credit unions and banks are providing a variety of support depending on the institution to include no or low interest, short term loans, loan extension options and the ability to cash out CDs with no penalty. Some credit unions are also providing low interest loans to people who are not members of the credit union.

Financial institutions that are offering support include:

DEFERRING PAYMENTS OR PAYMENT PLANS

Utilities to include El Paso Water Utility (915-594-5500), El Paso Electric (915-543-5970) and Texas Gas Service (800-700-2443) will work with customers to defer payments or create flexible payment plans.

Cell phone carriers, depending on the carrier, will work with customers to create flexible payment plans and to waive late fees. Carriers include AT&T (800-331-0500), Sprint (888-211-4727), T-Mobile (877-746-0909) and Verizon (866-266-1445)

UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS

The Texas Workforce Commission considers federal workers affected by the shutdown to be “laid off” from their jobs. You can apply for benefits at ui.texasworkforce.org 24 hours a day or by calling 800-939-6631 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. TEMPORARY EMPLOYMENT

Workforce Solutions Borderplex (915-887-2600, www.borderplexjobs.com) has created a list of employers willing to hire federal employees on a temporary basis.

FOOD

El Pasoans Fighting Hunger and their 125 non-profit partners (915-298-0353, www.elpasoansfightinghunger.org) has emergency food baskets for impacted employees available throughout the community at food pantries.

MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES AND STRESS RELIEF

Emergence Health Network (www.emergencehealthnetwork.org) has a crisis hotline (915-779-1800 manned by qualified mental health professional and backed up by on-call professionals who are available 24/7. You can also visit one of their mental health clinics.

YMCA of El Paso (www.elpasoymca.org) is offering free family memberships to furloughed employees.
