VLog: Quick Review of the Weber Grill Restaurant in Indianapolis

The Weber Grill Restaurant is a really unique dining experience. The food is all prepared on Weber Kettle style grills. The quality of the food is really top notch. All the meat has that wood/charcoal grill flavor.

The appetizers were really tasty and the desserts were the perfect ending to an amazing meal. They have four locations, all in the Midwest USA: Indianapolis, IN, Chicago, IL, Lombard, IL, and Schaumburg, IL. I really hope they expand down into the Southwest.

Company History

It all started with a quest for a better steak. Back in the 1950s, brick fireplace barbecues were very popular, so a fellow by the name of George Stephen decided to build himself one. After he finished it, he invited his friends over for a barbecue. The steaks went up in flames. For George, the dinner was a disaster but it got him thinking — there had to be a better way.

Luckily, George’s day job was at Weber Brothers Metal Works where he spent his time welding half spheres together to make buoys. He knew his way around a metal shop and after the flop of the barbecue, it all clicked. He took one of the half spheres, put legs on it, punched holes in the bottom for air flow and put a lid on top. Voila, the iconic Weber kettle grill was born.

George’s first grill continued to evolve for years and the company grew into the most trusted grilling name in the industry. All because of a few burnt steaks and one man who was willing to discover what’s possible.

In 1989, the company opened the first Weber Grill Restaurant in Wheeling, Illinois, but in spite of a remodeling in 2000, this location closed in 2010. As of August 2021, four additional locations are open in Lombard, Illinois (opened 1999), River North, Chicago (2002), Schaumburg, Illinois (2005), and Indianapolis (2007).

While a majority share of Weber-Stephen Products LLC was sold to BDT Capital Partners in 2010, the acquisition did not include restaurant operations. While both the restaurants and outdoor cooking equipment maintain the Weber branding, two separate companies now exist. The restaurants remain solely owned by the Stephen family.
