The El Paso Chihuahuas fell 9-2 to the Round Rock Express in the first game of their season-long 13-day road trip.
The Chihuahuas were held without an extra-base hit until the ninth inning, when Christian Villanueva doubled. Villanueva went 2-for-4 with a run scored against his former organization.
The Chihuahuas trailed 2-0 in the top of the fourth when Villanueva ran home from third base on a wild pitch. El Paso’s second run came with two outs in the ninth when Diego Goris laced an RBI single to left field. Round Rock plated two runs each in the first and fourth.
The Express’ biggest rally came in the sixth, when the Rangers’ Triple-A club scored five runs in a nine-batter frame, including a three-run home run by shortstop Jurickson Profar.
Rangers’ pitcher A.J. Griffin threw two shutout innings in an injury rehab start. San Diego Padres outfielder Travis Jankowski went 1-for-4 atop the order for El Paso on his injury rehab game.
Adam Cimber tossed a scoreless ninth inning for the Chihuahuas, his third straight shutout appearance.
