Back to Back! Socorro ISD Earns ‘Best Communities for Music Education Award’

The Socorro Independent School District has won its second consecutive Best Communities for Music Education Award by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM). The honor recognizes SISD’s superb commitment to comprehensive music education for all students.

“I’m very excited about this second year honor for our teachers,” said Janet Lynch, instrumental music specialist in SISD. “Being a music teacher is not an easy job. Our teachers devote a lot of extra time and build relationships with our students. This is a well deserved honor, they work very hard for our students.”

SISD is the only NAMM honoree in the Region 19 area and one of 583 recipients in the nation to be recognized. SISD is among only four percent of school districts in the nation to earn the distinction.

Via a news release, district officials shared that, “More than 60 percent of SISD students are enrolled in a fine arts class. Starting at the elementary level, SISD students are exposed to music education to ensure they receive a well-rounded education.”

Students district-wide participate in award-winning music programs such as band, choir, orchestra, mariachi, guitar, piano and fiddle, and participate and excel in district, region and state competitions.

SISD qualified for the music education award based on funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs.

According to scientists and researchers at Northwestern University – via a press release by NAMM – students in community music programs achieve life-long academic success, including higher high school graduation rates and college attendance.
