Vista Del Sol Elementary teacher and Socorro Independent School District 2020 Elementary Teacher of the Year Pedro Gurrola was named the 2021 ESC Region 19 Elementary Teacher of the Year.
Gurrola is a fifth-grade teacher with 23 years of teaching experience. He was honored for his unwavering commitment to the teaching craft, providing high-quality and innovative instruction, and his dedication to serve all students in the region, especially at Vista Del Sol and in Team SISD.
“I believe in what we do and what we stand for,” said Gurrola via Twitter. “I am thankful to continue to have the opportunity to represent #TeamSISD and share all the #EndlessOpportunities offered.”
SISD superintendent Jose Espinoza, Ed.D., shared the news with Team SISD via Twitter after the Region 19 announcement.
“Congrats to @PGorro_VDSES for being named @ESCRegion19 Elementary Teacher of the Year!,” Espinoza said. “Your love for teaching has made all the difference in your students’ hearts to develop their own gifts and hidden talents. #TeamSISD is incredibly proud of your work.”
Prior to teaching, Gurrola worked as a graphic artist, but said he was not getting the satisfaction from work that he sought until he started his career in education. He said he teaches his students to never give up and to always believe in themselves.
His colleagues and school administrators were not surprised by the fifth-grade teachers’ win. They describe him as a great role model for students.
“Congratulations Mr. Gurrola,” said Vista Del Sol principal Cynthia Velasquez via Twitter. “We are proud to have you represent Vista Del Sol, #TeamSISD and Region 19 as you move on to state! The greatness within you shines bright, especially around your students. Thank you for all you do. We are filled with joy.”
The announcement was made during a special ceremony August 8 via a YouTube livestream.
