Socorro ISD educator named Region 19 Teacher of the Year and State Finalist

Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary teacher and SISD Elementary Teacher of the Year Perla Lozoya was named the 2020 Region 19 Elementary Teacher of the Year at the Region 19 celebration.

Region 19 officials announced that Lozoya is also a state finalist in the Texas Teacher of the Year program.

She is one of only three elementary school teachers to represent their areas at the state level in the recognition program to honor the state’s most outstanding teachers.

Lozoya is a fourth-grade teacher and has 14 years of teaching experience. Before becoming an educator, she was a social worker who offered teen parents guidance and support.

Her students say she teaches with enthusiasm and fills their minds with knowledge and their hearts with love. She loves to dance and incorporates music and dancing in many of her lessons.

Lozoya was recently a guest speaker at a Region 19 early childhood education conference, where she shared her passion for teaching using song and dance to engage her students and help them learn while being active and having fun.

The honor was bestowed on Lozoya, Thursday evening, August 22nd.
