The Socorro Independent School District will host its seventh annual district wide mother-daughter conference from 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Jan. 28 at El Dorado High School.
All SISD sixth- through 12th-grade girls and their mothers or mother figure are invited to attend.
The conference’s goal is to give mothers and daughters time together and to see ways to improve their lives. More than 1,000 participants are expected.
During the one-day event, they can explore topics such as career choices, college opportunities, self-esteem and self-confidence workshops. Presenters also will talk about domestic violence, law enforcement opportunities, college and career readiness, district advanced and appropriate dress for school and work.
“I want them to get opportunity to bond,” said Fernando Vasquez, conference coordinator and SISD’s Associate Director of State and Federal Programs. “For the middle school students, I want their parents to see what is being offered at the high school level. We have invited presenters from advanced academic and CTE (Career and Technical Education) programs.”
The conference also offers some fun events, such as archery, firefighter physical skills and other activities. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. The event is free, but donations of canned goods and non-perishable food for the less fortunate will be accepted at the door.
