Socorro ISD students take top honors in annual citywide EPCC art contest

Several Socorro Independent School District Students won awards for their creative artwork in the 2020 El Paso Community College K-12 Art Exhibit.

Four SISD students placed first through third, two took the prestigious President’s Award and three earned honorable mentions.

“On behalf of the SISD Fine Arts Department, I would like to say congratulations to you all (teachers) and your students,” said visual arts specialist Macka Jones. “What a fantastic way to represent your respected campuses and our school district!”

The SISD winning artists were selected out of hundreds of students across the region and swept the top spots in the middle and high school divisions.

“I’ve never been in first place for a competition like this,” said Dustin Perez, an eighth grader at Montwood Middle School. “So, I feel honored.”

Perez, who placed first in Division III, said he loves the beauty and creativity that comes from art and the possibility of different perspectives.

“People use art for many reasons, but for me it is a form of communication because I used to have trouble speaking and I’m often shy. Art is a way for me to get out whatever I have going on in my head,” he said.

Isabella Hebler, an eighth grader at Ensor Middle School, agreed that art is an important form of expression.

“Sometimes people can’t put what they’re thinking into words. So if you can use art to visualize or represent what you are feeling it can help explain what the person is trying to say,” Hebler said.

Hebler was the recipient of the President’s Award in Division III.

“I felt very proud that I won the President’s Award,” she said. “I didn’t know about the award but when I found out I was shocked.”

The winners were announced December 1 in a virtual ceremony for the annual citywide event.
