HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss (28-26, 14-10 Conference USA) completed its sweep over UTEP (22-31, 13-11 C-USA), winning the series finale 6-4 on Sunday at Southern Miss Softball Field.
With the loss, UTEP will play one of the early games on Wednesday, May 11 at the C-USA Tournament in Denton, Texas this upcoming week.
UTEP will leave the Helen of Troy Softball Complex at 3 p.m. to fly out of El Paso International Airport onMay 9.
UTEP had issues again, leaving nine runners left on base, including two in the sixth and one in the seventh inning.
After being down 6-1, the Miners scored two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to cut the lead to 6-4, but couldn’t sustain anymore offense.
Cortney Smith and Ariel Blair each scored runs in the sixth on Southern Miss errors, while Smith recorded a groundout RBI in the seventh.
In the first, Tori Dew put her squad on the board first with an RBI double that plated leadoff hitter Lauren Holifield.
In the top fourth, Taylor Sargent tallied the Miners’ first hit, a double to deep right center. It was Sargent’s 15th double of the season, as she ranks in the top 10 in C-USA.
The Golden Eagles went up 2-0 in the home fourth on a Morgan McKeever sacrifice fly to center.
The Miners cut the lead to 2-1 on a Kaitlin Ryder two-out double that plated Courtney Clayton. Pepi followed with a single through the left side, advancing Ryder to third, but the runner were left stranded.
Southern Miss scored four more in the fifth, highlighted by a McKeever two-run single.
UTEP will play at the C-USA Tournament May 11-14 in Denton, Texas. Game one (no. 6 seed vs. no. 7 seed) and game two (no. 5 seed vs. no. 8 seed) will be played on Wednesday in the early games. The winner of game one will play the no. 3 seed, while the winner of game four will take on the no. 4 seed. Seeds no. 1 and 2 will open up on Thursday.
