Southern Miss Sweeps UTEP on Saturday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The UTEP softball team tallied seven hits on the day, as Southern Miss completed a Saturday sweep at Southern Miss Softball Field.

The Golden Eagles (27-26, 13-10 Conference USA) won both contests 3-0 and clinched a spot in the C-USA Tournament in Denton, Texas on May 11-14. The Miners (22-30) drop to 13-10 in league play and into fourth place in the West Division. LA Tech (12-8), after its two wins on Saturday at Charlotte (10-13), moves into second, while Southern Miss moves to third.

Final seeds will be determined after all of Sunday’s contests, as the Miners need to win the series finale to clinch a top four seed. UTEP and Southern Miss will play game three at noon CT.

UTEP 0, Southern Miss 3

Southern Miss scored three runs in the fourth inning, while UTEP had eight runners left on base on five hits. The Miners loaded the bases in the third inning with no outs and in the sixth inning with one out, but couldn’t advance the runners across home plate.

Courtney Clayton tallied her 76th hit to add to the single-season program record, and Taylor Sargent doubled in the fourth, her 14th of the season. Kiki Pepi, Cortney Smith and Jade Rodriguez each recorded knocks.

Clayton extended her C-USA hitting streak to 21 games with a leadoff single in the first, but the Golden Eagles’ starting pitcher Samantha Robles kept the Miners’ potent offense in check. Robles (16-10) threw a complete game victory, striking out four and allowing only two hits.

Pinch hitter Lindsey Sokoloski singled with one out in the seventh. Pearson (7-9) took the loss in a complete game effort, allowing three runs (two earned).
