El Paso Police say the driver who rear-ended a semi tractor-trailer early Saturday morning has died as a result of his injuries.
29-year-old Eric Aofia died after the black BMW he was driving struck the back of a semi that was making a right turn into the Walmart parking long along the 10600 Block of Gateway West. The driver of the truck, 53-year-old Roberto Anchondo was not injured.
Officers with the Pebble Hills Regional Command responded to the scene shortly after the wreck, and began to investigate. According to officials, Aofia was traveling at a “high rate of speed” when the wreck happened. He was transported to Del Sol Medical Center where he died Sunday afternoon.
Police believe alcohol and speed are factors in this wreck. This was the city’s 32nd traffic fatality of the year.
