Stanton Street Set to Reopen to Two-Way Traffic Friday

Motorists in the Mission Hills, Kern Place, Alexander and Rim Road neighborhoods will soon have an easier time navigating, as Stanton Street will re-open to two-way traffic between Cincinnati Avenue and Schuster Avenue on Friday, June 9, 2017, according to the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority.

Stanton will re-open to two-way traffic south of Schuster later this month.

For the remainder of this week, however, motorists, pedestrians and cyclists should use extra caution when travelling along Stanton Street as crews from Paso del Norte Trackworks finalize paving and install temporary striping.

When it re-opens to two-way traffic, Stanton Street will function differently than it has in the past.

As part of the El Paso Streetcar Project, the corridor has been reconfigured to better serve all users — motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and transit users. In addition to on-street parking, when it re-opens Stanton will include one southbound travel lane, a two-way center turn lane where the streetcar will run, one northbound lane and a two-way cycle track on the east side of Stanton Street. Streetcar stations will be located in the middle of the street at selected intersections.

At this time, those facilities are being marked with temporary paint. The temporary striping will be less robust than the permanent striping which is planned for this facility.  The final markings for the bike facility will include thermoplastic green and white paint, dedicated bicycle traffic signals, vertical delineators to separate auto and cycle traffic, and other modern pavement markings.

In order to protect the permanent pavement markings from damage by heavy machinery associated with the project, permanent pavement markings will be placed on all impacted streets when the El Paso Streetcar Project is completed. In the meantime, temporary markings are being place throughout the project.
