Streetcar Work Requires Alternate Routes for Motorists on Franklin, Stanton

Utility work associated with the El Paso Streetcar Project will require some motorists to use alternate routes in Downtown El Paso next week. Meanwhile, street and lane closures continue at other location along the 4.8 mile route.

Beginning this week, Franklin Avenue will be closed to all eastbound traffic from El Paso Street to Oregon Street. Oregon Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction at Franklin at that time as well. Motorists who typically use that section of Franklin Avenue should consider using Missouri Avenue as an alternate route.

Using Wyoming Avenue as an eastbound alternate will help motorists avoid getting caught-up in the existing closures of Main Drive and San Antonio Avenue at Santa Fe Street. This closure is expected to last approximately four weeks.

Work also continues in the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Stanton Street where lane reductions are in place. Because Stanton is closed to all traffic at Wyoming, motorists who typically use Stanton Street to access I-10 west, should consider an alternate route, such as taking Stanton Street to Missouri Avenue to Mesa Street to Yandell Drive to I-10 west.

This closure is expected to last approximately four weeks.

As work progresses, Stanton Street will be closed as far south as Franklin, in the coming weeks. An exact date for that closure has not yet been announced.

Kansas Street remains closed to all traffic between Texas Avenue and San Antonio Avenue. San Antonio Avenue is closed to thru traffic between Stanton Street and Campbell Street.

Father Rahm Avenue remains closed to traffic between Santa Fe and Kansas. As part of the El Paso Streetcar project, new sidewalks will be installed along Father Rahm Avenue between Kansas Street and Santa Fe Street. Beginning this week, crews will begin replacing sidewalks one block at a time.

Sidewalk closures will begin this week on the south side of Father Rahm between Kansas and Stanton. Crews will work within that block removing the existing sidewalk, preparing the ground and installing the new sidewalk.

Lane Closures at Other Locations

  • Intermittent lane closures on Stanton Street from River Avenue to Baltimore Drive
