Inaugural Sun Bowl Flag Football Tournament kicks off this weekend

The Sun Bowl Association is ready to kick-off the 2021 football season with the Inaugural Sun Bowl Flag Football Tournament this weekend.

“We are excited to host a community event after a year-and-a-half of trying times and feel this is a great way to kick off the football season,” Executive Director Bernie Olivas said.

The tournament will run Friday-Sunday, August 20-22 at the Westside Sports Complex, located at 201 Isela Rubalcava Boulevard.

There are 78 teams set to compete consisting of 14 members, who are ready to compete in this 8-on-8 flag football tournament. All participants will receive a tournament t-shirt and first place teams in all divisions will receive a tournament trophy.

The winner of the Men’s A – Competitive Division & Women’s A – Competitive Division will receive monetary payouts. The champion of the competitive bracket will receive a $2,000 payout.  The winner of the Men’s B – Intermediate Division, Men’s C – Recreations Division and Coed C –Recreational Division will receive a $1,000 payout.

“We are anticipating some great competition as monetary prizes tend to make the play a bit more exciting,” Sun Bowl Special Events Director Joe Daubach said.

Games will run from 6 p.m. (MT) through 11 p.m. (MT) on Friday night, followed by games from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday and from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday.

“Thanks to the partnership with the Southwest Flag Football League, we believe this can become another long-lasting staple on the Sun Bowl calendar,” Olivas said.
